There are three types of pearls, which are available in the market, these days- Natural, Cultured and Imitation Pearls.
Natural Pearls: These are truly magic performed by Mother Nature. These are really rare and very expensive because we cannot make them with our machines. They were famously found in the Persian Gulf before oil was discovered around 1930’s. The only way to find these pearls is traditional fishing and still, now they are found in small quantities. Cultured Pearls: These are similar to natural pearls, but these are produced with the help of humans or in better words ‘cultured’. Imitation Pearls: These don’t form naturally and are produced by dipping beads in a solution made of fish scales. These are also a cheaper alternative to the above two, and although it may have a glossy enamel or coating, in the beginning, it will fade over time.

- Shape- Pearls are available in different shapes like Round, near round, button, oval, drop, and circle and baroque. A perfectly round pearl is very rare to find as an oyster grows pearls organically and no tampering can change the shape of the pearl.
- Size- An average pearl size varies from 7 or 7 and a half mm to 20 mm or more. Most commonly customers buy a pearl between 10 to 15 mm. A large pearl of excellent luster is considered very rare and precious. But before buying the pearls you need to check their authenticity and always buy pearls from reputed jewellery shops only. Most of them can provide you authentication certificate along with their pearls, and these certificates are issued by the government agencies.
- Color- Although pearls are usually preferred in white there are a variety of colors to choose from like rose or silver or cream or gold or blue or gray or pistachio. The overall color, the intensity of the color or the lightness or darkness should also be considered.
